Are you a parent of a child that suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Or are you on the outside looking in, Like myself? We can all assume that every child with ADHD should be medicated, but we do not know what adverse side affects or penalties medication may cause a child to have. Personally, I am interested in how the parents and families of children with ADHD feel about medication. Is the medication helpful to their children? How does it make them feel? Have they even refused to allow their children to take medication?
I have heard and read in some instances that medicine provided to children with ADHD has done nothing but make children like zombies. That's not good right? I wonder if parents and families of children with ADHD would agree with this statement.
I started this blog so that my research may also help someone else curious about these things. I plan to interview some parents of children with ADHD. I will also post some scholarly articles and journals that talk about the different types of medicine and what they are supposed to be used for, and how they affect children. I am very excited to begin, and please be on the look out for my blog posts.
Thanks,
Ashley Matthews
Ashley,
ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent start. With the prevalence of ADHD (and the increase in diagnoses of cases of ADHD) I know that there is a TON of great information about it out there. You are posing some very important questions here that will certainly be interesting to explore. Whether or not we should be medicating children and to what extent can be a contentious issue, both inside and out of the classroom. I look forward to reading both articles that you link as well as your personal insight into the debate.
Keep up the good work.

Ashley,
ReplyDeleteYour question is a topic of "hot debate" based on the increasing number of people who have been diagnosed with ADHD. I begin to question: What are the symptoms of ADHD? How is one diagnosed? Are people being over-diagnosed as ADHD? I pose these questions because I feel they might provide some background knowledge and answers to your question.
As a parent, one might feel frightened or guilty to medicate their child daily. Therefore, it is important to know the effects of the medication and to be aware of research about the particular stimulant. Is medicating a child with ADHD effective? Will the child's performance in the classroom be improved? Essentially, does the stimulant meet the needs of the child with ADHD?
I found an article that may help to answer some your questions. This article conducted a study that was designed to assess general and special education teachers’ knowledge, opinions, and experience related to the diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)and its treatment with stimulant medication.

@handorm thanks for sharing that helpful link. I am sure others will enjoy that also.
ReplyDeleteHey Ashley, sorry about the delay in response, I have been super busy. But I find your post and topic very interesting. Since I have worked with children for the past 9 years I have seen my fair share of children diagnosed with ADHD. One thing I have noticed is that not all the children exhibit the same behaviors. They may be similar in a sense that they are overly hyper and a tad bit inattentive but there is a clear difference in the behaviors, which probably varies from child to child. In my opinion I don't think every child diagnosed with ADHD needs medication. I have worked with children w/ ADHD who went a time without medication but I was able to keep them occupied w/ the right interventions. Some children that I have seen on medication seemed to have turned into zombies. Displaying dull behaviors thats not typical. I believe it's a coin toss and has a varied effect on the children. Have you had any personal experiences w/ this situation.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question Rijon, I have had experience with this as well. I have also noticed that not all children with ADHD are the same. I also have to agree with you that not all children will react to the medication the same. If you take a look at the parent guide to Ritalin(My last post), you will notice that that question was addressed. Go check it out and let me know what you think!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rijon for all of your insight.
